The Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. It corrected the gradual drift between the Julian calendar and the solar year. Today, it is the most widely used civil calendar in the world.
The calendar has 12 months and normally 365 days. A leap year has 366 days. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except for century years that are not divisible by 400.
Although the Gregorian calendar is used internationally for civil purposes, many cultures and religions also maintain their own traditional calendars.
